WordPress plugins add additional functionality to your blog. You can use plugins to back up your files, add security features, fight spam, and more. There is a plugin available for just about anything you may need for your blog.
There are 2 ways to add plugins to your WordPress site.
Option 1 – You can search/browse for plugins in the WordPress Plugin Directory
Option 2 – You can download a plugin file from the developer’s site and upload the plugin’s .zip file from your computer to WordPress.
This process is similar to installing a new theme. I will show you how to install a WordPress plugin using both options.
Option 1 – Search and Browse the WordPress Plugin Directory
Step 1 – Head to the Add New Plugin page by clicking on Plugins > Add New
Step 2 – Browse through the plugins listed on the page or type a keyword into the search box to find a specific plugin function.
Step 3 – Install & Activate the plugin. The Install Now button will become the Activate button after installation is complete.
Step 5 – Visit the plugin’s settings page to complete set-up. Most plugin settings are found under the Settings menu.
Option 2 – Upload a Plugin From Your Computer
Step 1 – Head to the Add New Plugins page.
Step 2 – Click on Upload Plugin.
Step 3 – Choose the .zip file from your computer.
Step 4 – Click on Install Now.
Step 5 – Activate the plugin.

Bonus Tip: If you are having trouble locating a plugin after installation look in the following places:
- Most plugins will be found under the Settings area.
- Genesis themed plugins will be found under the Genesis area.
- Larger plugins will have their own listing on the left sidebar.
- If you still can’t find it, try the Tools area.
